Presbyopia

Presbyopia and the Human Eye

Many people are far-sighted (presbyopia) which is a result of growing old. Vision acuity for close objects over time decreases so most people after 40 need eyeglasses for reading. This is a result of the fact that the ocular lens is getting old and loses elasticity and ability to adapt its shape to the distance of the object.

Since presbyopia affects people regardless of whether they have some other refractive error, the solutions are diverse. In other words, if a person suffers from short-sightedness, far-sightedness, or astigmatism since youth, after 40 age-related presbyopia is added to the existing problem. For this reason, it is necessary to solve other eye problems together with presbyopia.

The Treatment of Presbyopia

The options to correct presbyopia are as follows:

  • Bifocal glasses or multifocal glasses with progressive lenses
  • Bifocal or multifocal contact lenses
  • Laser intervention with monovision
  • To implant a multifocal intraocular lens or a monofocal lens with monovision
